Business angels are familiar with the problem: Which of all the cases I see is the „best“ one? To which shall I give my money? Which will perform best? Which one has the best business plan, the largest exit value, the highest multiple?
But it’s not about „cases“. It’s about entrepreneurs, men and women who leave their comfort zone to create something new, to change the world a tiny bit.
By talking about Multiples and ROIs, we reduce people to numbers. That’s dangereous. Success can’t be predicted and it’s not determined by the business plan – it’s the result of ambition meeting opportunities. The value created by a company entirely depends on the ability of the entrepreneurs to create value.
It’s about human beings, not about „cases.“ Let’s never forget that.
Please always keep in mind that you don’t know (and you can’t know) how successful the persons you’re just talking to will be. They take a risk which most people would never do, and they give you the chance to be part of it. They spend time with you in the hope that you will help them. The least you can do is to encourage them and share some of the know-how and experience you have and they don’t, and eventually help them becoming successful.
Dear actors of the startup industry:
Our goal must be to create more successful companies. Success depends entirely on the abilities and actions of the people involved in a startup. So we must help building teams that have a higher chance of success. This only happens if we make sure that all actors maintain eye-level and treat each other with the respect they deserve.
Let’s stop the startup circus and let’s start building sustainable and successful companies.
